Caney High School Gymnasium 1923 |

By 1922 Caney High School student population had reached 1,998, requiring the necessity to enlarge the high school building. The Caney Board of Education passed a resolution February 9, 1922, to acquire additional ground to add to the present site of the Caney High School and to alter, improve, remodel and enlarge the present city Caney High School and to equip and furnish the same and to issue bonds in a sum not to exceed $85,000.00.
The election held on April 4, 1922 passed and J.L. Zollars of Independence, Kansas was awarded the general construction contract for a sum of $65,000.00. He was requested to complete the building expansion by November 30, 1922. The building was to include an auditorium, gymnasium, four classrooms, manual training room at ground level and enlarged heating system.
The building was completed and approved by the Board of Education on September 3, 1923.
Many good and successful years passed with Caney High School providing students and the community the very best in an educaional faciltiy. However, as time moved forward and after 39 years of service, the bulding was laid to rest in 1973 and demolished in 1974.
