Tuttle Creek Maps

At the moment Tuttle Creek Lake has two separate horse/hiking trails on the east side of the lake. The oldest, and at low water level, is the trail at the Carnahan Rec Area, off Carnahan Creek Road. The camp loops provide great views of Carnahan Cove and one can get in 5-8 miles of riding or hiking. When the water is at normal pool the trail across the creek parallels the beach northward to the old Garrison area, with access points at Sunset Cove and Oak Canyon. The trails are rocky, and despite efforts, are at times a bit hard to follow. The experience is well worth the inconvenience of waiting until the creek is accessible, as one gets a great look at the lake itself as well as the use of a challenging trail. There is no potable water at the Carnahan Rec area, but there are outhouses. Pottawatomie County is in charge of the Rec Area and the trails across the creek are on the U.S. Corps of Engineers property. Twenty miles of riding or hiking are available in this area at given times.
The Randolph State Park horse and hiking trails were built in 1996 and have been improved upon each year. The trails are located in the 200 acre park with U.S. Highway 16 dividing it into two sections. Randolph South is the usual trail head and camping area, with real toilets, showers, potable water, and a dump station, but no electrical hookups. Randolph North is accessed either by crossing the highway at the entrance gate or following the trail under the big bridge that spans Tuttle Creek Lake. These trails are very well marked and easy to follow. There is map at the trailhead that shows various access points. Some places on this trail come close to other trail loops, due to the small area involved. The only part of this trail that may be impacted by high water is the far north L to LL loop. There are 14.75 miles of trail in this area.
These trails were built and are maintained by the Flint Hills Trail Assn. and supported by the Kansas Trails Council. Anyone interested in becoming involved can contact either organization through the Tuttle Creek State Park Office or the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Office of Manhattan, Kansas.
