Most of the work of the Council and the Board of Directors in particular takes place without fanfare and goes relatively unnoticed by the general public in spite of the fact that the Board and the Council spend hundreds of man hours every year to maintain and/or improve the trail system of Kansas.

Here we hope to help the public better understand the self-directed and self-motivated functions of the Council and especially those of the Board of Directors and trail coordinators.  Many people simply are not aware of the fact that governmental agencies in Kansas such as the Corps of Engineers, the Department of Wildlife and Parks and County Commissioners are not in the business of building trails.  In most cases they are supportive of efforts to build trails on public land but they simply do not have the time, the personnel and the budget to build trails.

The fact of the matter is that almost all of the trails in Kansas exist because of the vision of people and organizations like ours and their willingness to donate countless hours to develop and maintain the trails of Kansas.  The rewards for their efforts and time are sore muscles, blisters, bug bites and, of course, the satisfaction of knowing that they are contributing to something that young and old alike can and will enjoy for many years to come.  The board makes significant decisions concerning the appropriation of funds for trail development and maintenance.  They serve as advisors and consultants to others in the construction of all kinds of trails.  They serve as liaisons to local , state and federal agencies that govern the public lands where existing, new or proposed trails are located.  But most of the time board members are out on the trail working on it, enjoying it and frequently doing both of these things at the same time.

We hope that you will take the time to go to some of the links below and see what the board and the council really do for Kansas trails.
