[Profiling the work of the Kansas Trails Council and its Board of Directors] This past August Kelly Heisenberger of the Jefferson County Conservation District met with the KTC Board of Directors and requested the assistance and the advice of the board in the design and construction of a multi-use trail in the Slough Creek Point vicinity of Perry Lake where development of a new recreational area is under way. The actual construction of the trail will be done by personnel of the Jefferson County Conservation District. On January 2, 2000 KTC board members Harriet Barber and Olivia Huddleston met with Kelly Heisenberger and Lisa Segal, Senior Intern at Kansas University, at Slough Creek Point on the far east side of Perry Lake. Harriet and Olivia were given a tour of the planned ADA Trail as well as the wetlands and shelter house at Slough Creek. They also had a chance to see the area where plains Indians of five states camped as they followed the buffalo. After the tour they immediately began flagging a path for the new trail and discussed their vision for the trail. This a unique area full of history and KTC has an opportunity to help put horses and hikers in an area with an ADA Trail and not interfere with that trail and its intended use. The Jefferson County Conservation District's plans include the ADA Trail, viewing areas overlooking the wetlands and bird sanctuaries, more water hydrants, more restrooms, a pond for handicapped fishing, and, of course, the horse and hiking trail. They also have other improvements planned. There are many additional miles of wooded hills in the JCCD lease and the Corps of Engineers has added 300 more acres for trail use. The Jefferson County Conservation District is hosting an extravaganza at the end of April. Rides, tree plantings and other events are being scheduled to celebrate the beginning of this relationship with the community. Harriet and Olivia are excited about their continued involvement in the project and the opportunity to explore more of the area on horseback. ____________________
