Our Baby Boy

We want to thank all our friends and family for the gifts and most of all for the support that they have given us upon the arrival of our new son. For those of you who don't know, we recently had a new baby boy. Robert Arthur arrived Thursday, September 17, at our local band-aid station some people call a hospital. He weighed a whopping 9 lbs. 11 oz. and was 23 inches long. When a baby is born the parents biggest fear is of any abnormalities or birth defects. With today's modern methods, birth defects are very easy to recognize before the birth has occured. Therefore, we knew ahead of time and was aware of the problem before the birth. When you have a child with a birth defect, it doesn't mean you will love them any less. Robert came in to the world with a very rare birth defect. He was born without any eyelids. A wetting solution was continuously applied while he was flown out to the nearest childrens medical center, which was the KU Medical Center. The rarity of this birth defect is 1 in every 850,000 births. Even though it is rare, they do have medical procedures to correct it. They usually use a skin graft to build eyelids. All the nerve endings and reflex actions are still there and with todays modern medicine, virtually no side effects will occur. What they did with Robert, is when they circumcized him they used the foreskin to create new eyelids. The tear ducts work fine and the reflex action will still take a few more weeks to become an automatic response. The only residual effect is Robert will be a little cock-eyed from now on. (Got ya)
( This joke is in no way intended to make fun of birth defects, because that is a very serious matter. Please no hate mail.)
