Many of our Disaster Volunteers must wear more than one hat for our Chapter and this is very common among small chapters. Below are our key volunteers and the areas in which they work.

Northern Cowley Co. Chapter is located in Winfield, Kansas. Winfield is in Cowley County in South Central Kansas, right on the Oklahoma line.
Winfield, provides disaster services for a county area of 750 sq. Miles. Within our jurisdiction we provide services for the cities of, Atlanta, Burden, Cambridge, Dexter, Floral, New Salem, Rock, Udall, and Winfield.
Our Chapter has 21 Disaster Volunteers which provide 24 hours a day disaster response for our communities. Each DAT team consists of 3 adult members and 2 youth volunteers. The DAT teams are on call for 1 month at time. Our on call DAT teams have a backup team consisting of 3 adults and 2 teens also. This allows us to be able to respond at any time while still enabling our volunteers to maintain their normal schedules. The local DAT team receives notification of disasters, from SFD to larger disasters by way of pagers through the local 911 system.
Our Chapter is fortunate not to have a lot of disasters, but we are always prepared. We average 2 calls a month where our volunteers will provide some type of service or direct disaster assistance to disaster victims. Besides these calls we also provide canteen services to the emergency workers in our communities.
We work very closely with our
chapter youth group, and utilize them extensively in our community disaster
education programs. Our youth group give presentations to local civic groups on
a regular basis, and are presently preparing to begin presentations on disaster
preparedness to the local school system. They will be targeting 4th graders,
and will be going to the class rooms this spring prior to our local storm
season.
